Cayenne

"Cayenne"  (pastel, 7x5 inches)  sold

This one I had started at a recent art fair, and it sold before it was quite done! Now that it's finished and framed, I'll be shipping to the buyer.

  1. Another amazing piece as usual, Rita! I was wondering, would you be willing to share a bit of info about the ground you use? It looks to be brushed on, and I'm wondering if you apply it with the subject in mind, or if it's random...thanks much!

  2. Hi Janine,
I use Art Spectrum brand Pastel Primer, in the terra cotta color, brushed onto Gatorboard, as my primary surface. I use that on probably 90% of my paintings, and all of my 5x7 cows for the past year. On the small works, the brushstrokes are random, although I do like to use a short, curvy stroke. On larger works, I will sometimes stroke the brush in directions that I think will enhance the subject, but I don't get too particular. Some randomness is in itself a refreshing element.
    Thanks for enjoying my work!
