I'm a bit behind on a new batch of underpaintings, so I found this old from last year that I hadn't pasteled yet (is pasteled a word?..) and finished it yesterday.

This prairie dog lives in Lubbock, TX, at Prairie Dog Town (of course! Did you know that prairie dogs live in vast underground communities called "towns"?)

If you're ever traveling through Lubbock I recommend a stop at Prairie Dog Town for a short walk and a dose of cuteness!

Though the prairie dog is native to North America, I've not seen many 'in the wild', but I have a few good shots from the many zoos I've visited over the years. I couldn't resist this little gal's roundness.

Day 26 - N is for Nutria

Day 26 in my 30-Paintings-in-30-Days of November.

The Nutria, or Copyu, is a large semi-aquatic rodent native to South America, that is actually considered a pest in many of the coastal United States. It was brought here for it's fur in the late 1800's, but when that market later collapsed, thousands were released into the wild.

I never knew any of that 'til I decided to add this cute fellow to my Alphabet Series. This one lives in Landa Park, New Braunfels, and had just snagged some water grasses to take home for dinner.

This was when I did two demos in quick succession with not much talking, to show the students some of the assembly-line production process I utilize at home.

I didn't have time to frame this one for the Wimberley Alive Music & Art Fest this weekend Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27 and 28, 2015. So I put it on auction instead. But I'll have a lot of my other November paintings at the festival. It will be raining (again!) but bring an umbrella and come on out anyway. Support the town's flood recovery and avoid the malls!

The cooler days put me in mind of ... squirrels.

 I decided here that I didn't like my decision for a lighter background...

 So I brushed it off...  and added some terra cotta (Art Spectrum) pastel primer...

Disregard the color variances on these progress shots - I worked into the evening, and my camera metering gets weird under just the studio lights. The top (final) image was scanned and is accurate!

Been a bit lazy myself, just hanging' and snackin' after recovering from a bout of icky stomach bug last week. Getting back into the routine of things and (trying) to catch up with all the overflow. I do have a nice batch of new underpaintings ready which I'm going to (try to) pastel on tomorrow! This one I finished on the weekend. This was a little challenging for me with it's softer cool light / warm shadow arrangement.

On another note, I'm excited to say that I am the Featured Artist for the first annual Wimberley Alive Music and Arts Festival, October 24 & 25, 2015, in Wimberley TX. Celebrating Wimberley's spirit and benefiting the Barnabas Connection for Wimberley Flood Recovery.
