#7 of 21-in-31 "Fiesta Chick"

"Fiesta Chick" (pastel, 6x4 inches) is on auction for a limited time at DailyPaintworks.

All right, it's the wrong time of year for Fiesta, but everyone needs a fun party now and then right?.. This Chick looks like she had a little bit too much fun last night, lol. It's funny how baby chicks do have such serious expressions, and those eye bags! Like they're older than their years (weeks, days?)

Enjoy these progress photos of the painting process! The last photo is of the colors I used.

#3 of 21-in-31 "Cheeky Chick"

"Cheeky Chick" (pastel, 4x4 inches) bid or buy here for a limited time

Here's my third painting for the month! I know I know, I'm only averaging every other day so far instead of the 2 out of 3 I aught to be, but I'll be catching up with many that I underpainted yesterday.

See a GIF of this cheeky chick on my Patreon page!

Chic Chick

"Chic Chick" (pastel, 6x4 inches)

Here's another one of my little favorites that was languishing in a gallery all through the pandemic. "Chic Chick" is finally home with me and will be with me at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival this weekend, hopefully to find her forever home. (If you're in the area, find me in booth 404 by the Watercolor Terrace!)

I love this one so much I had her as my Facebook business profile pic for a long while there! Enjoy this fun GIF and progress pics!

Warm Fuzzy #24 - Power Chick

Warm Fuzzy #24 - "Power Chick" (pastel, 4x4 inches) click here to bid or buy

This was the result of a "what if". Richard McKinley encourages his students to keep a "what if" attitude when deciding how to approach a painting, and my habit of working in series of small Daily Paintings especially lends itself to this approach, in fact sometimes demands it! I felt like a lot of my backgrounds lately were becoming a little too predictable. So with this chick I wondered "what if the background were to match the beak, but bolder?" Ok, it did help that there was a bit of this exciting red in the background of the photo. But when I began to throw in those intense reds, orange and fuscia, suddenly the chick went "Wow! Pow!" Timid little chick no longer! Just goes to show you the power of a background and how it can change the mood of a painting!
I could paint this chick like Andy Warhol's soup cans with all sorts of background colors, just to see the difference... hmmm...

Day 19 of my 30 Paintings in 30 Days of November!

I think I might have over 2000 photos of chicks from the San Antonio Rodeo chick incubator. It pulls me like a magnet every year! (A few of the photos are actually good shots, so of course I have to paint them!)

Cluck Kent

"Cluck Kent" (pastel, 8x6 inches) $300 framed

Today I learned a bit about how to tell a young hen from a young rooster. Needing to name this one, I wanted to get it right, so I found this handy blog and decided that this is a cockerel (a young rooster) based on the size of his growing comb and wattles.

Cluck Kent will be with me at the Bayou City Art Festival in Downtown Houston, this weekend October 13-14, 2018. Come out and enjoy the weekend and this glorious fall weather! Find me in booth #350 on McKinley Street.

Here are some progress shots of Cluck:
