#5 of 21-in-31 "Baby Blackbird"

"Baby Blackbird" (pastel on black Richeson surface, 7x5) bid or buy here

Here's something different.
Ok, it is another bird, but it's on the black Richeson pastel surface. That surface has a lot of rough texture, but it's a uniform texture. I've used it a few times and always like it, especially for landscapes actually. But this bird was so very black I felt it called for starting with a black surface.
I set my phone right in front of my painting today as I worked this one. It was fairly quick (but not this quick, lol) and I like the looseness.

Enjoy this little speed video!

Day #4 of 21-in-31: "Lorikeet II"

"Lorikeet II" (pastel, 7x5 inches, bid or buy here)

Ok, I'm slooowly catching up! This Lorikeet is one I've painted before. It's one of the best pics I've got of a Lorikeet, such personality! Maybe someday I'll do a painting of me with a hat full of Lorikeets from the family vacation that garnered me this pic. LOL

See the first "Lorikeet" painting from 2017 on my blog. This time, I flipped the image, and made the arched perch into a branch.
Enjoy these progress pics of "Lorikeet II"!

#10 of 21-in-31: Dior

"Dior" (pastel, 7x5 inches) bid or buy here

I named her Dior because she reminds me of the black and white gemstone called Diorite. Plus, she just looks so elegant. She really did have those shaped eyebrows! I met this heifer at a friend's ranch while up in Minnesota last fall.

I had fun with my mark-making on this one, and used a relatively limited palette.

Enjoy this video montage of the painting of Dior!

Day 8 of 21-in-31: "Mimoo"

Here's Day 8 of 21-in-31: "Mimoo" (pastel, 7x5 inches), the little cousin of Day 7's "Moofasa"! They were both with me at the Boerne Art Waddle yesterday.

Day 7 of 21-in-31: Moofasa

I've been afraid of slipping behind in my goal of 21-in-31 this month, so I marathoned 3 little pastelings yesterday of some little underpaintings I got done on Wednesday. Here is Day 7 of 21-in-31 "Moofasa" (pastel, 7x5 inches). He'll be with me this Saturday at the Boerne Art Waddle. map here. Stop by the Carriage House Gallery booth on the creek if you're in the area!

Tomorrow I'll post Mimoo, his little cousin, who will also be there!

See a quick GIF here!

Poppy - Day 6 of 21-in-31

"Poppy" (pastel, 7x5 inches) bid or buy here

Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas to me! I found this painting that had not been posted yet. Somehow it got overlooked in the computer for months! I had finished it at the last minute before delivering several small paintings to my solo show opening in March, and it just got swept up with the others and somehow missed being posted.

SO! Since it's still available I've decided to count it towards my 21 paintings to post this month. Poppy will take the place of a painting I did today that I probably won't be posting because it was a "copy" of another recent painting that a client wanted me to paint for them because they missed out on buying it first. I don't do copies very often, but when I do, I don't really like to post them if they're from a painting that was recent.

See a nifty little GIF of Poppy here!

Day 19 of 30 - Carmel

Day 19 of 30 paintings in June - "Carmel" (pastel, 7x5 inches)

This was my opening demo for the online pastel workshop I'm currently giving for these three days. I saw this baby camel at a petting zoo somewhere, and as she was chewing some hay, her mouth had the cutest expression!

This painting will be with me at the Rockport Art Fest (July 3 and 4, 2021) located right on the beautiful coast of Texas. My first live art festival in over a year, yay!! Hope you can come out and enjoy the fun.

Watch a GIF and some progress pics of Carmel the camel here!

Day 9 of 30 - Kahlua

Day 9 of 30 paintings in June - "Kahlua" (pastel, 7x5 inches) bid or buy here for one week only

This was a pretty little miniature horse I came across one day in a field with a miniature donkey of the same color. They were best buds and so cute together! I might have a pic that I'll paint of them both some day. But I wanted to do this single portrait first.

See some progress pics here!

Say Cheese! (Warm Fuzzy #65)

Warm Fuzzy #65 - "Say Cheese!" (pastel, 7x5 inches) $285

I just love the expressions that animals are capable of. A friend has a herd of Pygmy goats; they are a never ending source of amusement and emotional therapy. Always easy to smile when hanging out with them.

See a slide show of progress pics on this post!

This cheesy goat will be another small work in my Solo Exhibition, Kindred Spirits, at the ARTS for Rural Texas in Fayetteville, March 27 - May 29, 2021. Opening Reception March 27, 5-7pm. View the show online here!

Nutty (Warm Fuzzy #62)

Warm Fuzzy #62 - "Nutty" (pastel, 7x5 inches)

See some progress pics of Nutty on this public Patreon post!

I managed to get three little fuzzies done this week during my Wednesday at the Carriage House Gallery. (Shhhh... just between you and me, I like working Wednesdays because they're relatively slow, and I can get a lot done!)

My travel setup - from the left: Rembrandts, Blue Earth, and my Heilman Sketchbox with a variety of Jack Richeson, Terry Ludwig, Art Spectrum Extra Soft Square, and a few pieces of Diane Townsend Terrages. Behind the sketchbox is a Ravenna table easel (also called a sketchbox, lol)

Nutty will be included in my Solo Exhibition, Kindred Spirits, at the ARTS for Rural Texas in Fayetteville, March 27 - May 29, 2021. Opening Reception March 27, 5-7pm.

"Rommie" was from the same herd as "Shareen". I thought his little curly horns were cute. Watch me pastel him in this speed video here!

Warm Fuzzy #28 - Mulberry Bun

Warm Fuzzy #28 - "Mulberry Bun" (pastel, 7x5 inches) click here to bid or buy

Another baby bun from ... yes... Fry's Fun Farm! Luckily I caught plenty of good pics last July and am still harvesting some from my files. I hope all of Fry's warm fuzzies are getting plenty of love and petting from the owners while they're not able to tour any events.

Here, the background got just a bit overworked, and I noticed that he seemed to be leaning a bit to the left..
...so I wiped off the background there and reapplied with fresher stokes, and added a bit more fuzz to his right rear leg to give him more stability.
Thanks for watching! Please share!

Warm Fuzzy #27 - Elysia

Warm Fuzzy #27 - "Elysia" (pastel, 7x5 inches) sold

I was able to get this one little demo done at the Carriage House Gallery on Thursday. (I started a bunny too, which will be my next post!)
