This was my replacement for missing out of recording "Spring Garden 2" from Tuesday's VOS. It's painted the same way, with a watercolor underpainting on Arches w/c paper.
The real time creation of this little landscape will be available to Patrons on my Patreon page soon, but meanwhile everyone can enjoy this little speed video!

Day 11 of 28: "A Sunny Walk"

This little painting will be the feature of my VOS video Episode 90, Part 2. Part 1 is another little garden landscape that I painted to replace the actual VOS Episode 90 (in which I painted "Spring Garden 2") which, due to technical difficulties, did not actually get recorded!

So I had some fun with watercolor underpainting for a couple days. I really like this image. I clearly remember taking the reference photo on a walk in some gardens somewhere. The happy daisies shooting up and casting long shadows... All around me were beautiful sights, but sometimes you just have to look where you're walking or you might miss something sweet!

Day 10 of 28: "Spring Garden 2"

This was a re-paint of a sold painting from 2012 that a client fell in love with. The original of this little landscape was one small part of a photo reference that I had posted way back in 2012 on DailyPaintworks as "The Cropping Challenge". Tulip Garden - won some pastels!

The Pastel Society of Southeast Texas has been having a themed painting challenge each month, and last month the subject was Flowers/Gardens. I'm thrilled to say that this won an Honorable Mention in the challenge (and $50 to Dakota Pastels! Whoo hoo!!)

Landscape is not my main thing, and frequently when I do one I'm either taking another artist's workshop or trying to channel another artist's style. For this one, I was inspired by the landscapes of Gustav Kimpt and a cloudy-day photo I took at the Dallas Arboretum which reminded me of Klimpt's landscapes. I painted this on MingART Premium sanded pastel paper, dark gray.

I REALLY enjoyed this one! I have a bunch of great sots of busy bees hovering around a blooming cactus from earlier this year. Finally decided to use one.

Park Trail #43

The final day of painting in Albert Handell's workshop we went to Santa Fe's charming historic El Ray Inn. Full of lovely gardens and meandering pathways between courtyards, this lush viewpoint was around back somewhere.

Rose

This was another (relatively) quick little plein air during the Albert Handell workshop, after painting a house across the street from the rose garden. (Stay tuned for tomorrow's post!) This was an unusually fresh (for me) watercolor underpainting before I covered just about all of it up with pastel, darn it! I still kinda like it though. At least I got shots of the underpainting...

Young Tree

A portrait of a little tree in Albert Handell's garden. I did this one quickly right after painting his house. He seemed to like this one best of all my paintings in his workshop. (He did help me out with loosening up some edges and creating more depth.)

As the title suggests, this is the home of Albert Handell! I took his garden workshop in Santa Fe last week, and this was my first painting. The light in Santa Fe was amazing, and it didn't get above 83 degrees the entire time. Perfect plein air painting weather!

Albert is an inspiring teacher. The best thing about his demos (besides how magically they progress) is his so obvious enjoyment of the painting process. And when he's not painting he's full of valuable info and insights into the business and creative sides of being a working artist.
